German–Polish ‘Unconference’

Convening

An unconference is not a conference in the traditional sense. No agenda is defined and there are no speakers. There is no audience to attentively follow the event as it unfolds. At an unconference, the participants organise themselves and choose their own discussion topics. They spontaneously run workshops and decide on the content. It is therefore a very unconventional kind of conference – an unconference. It allows people to enter into open and unedited conversations with one another.

These discussions are extremely useful on a personal level. This conference format was successfully implemented by Pfleiderer last autumn. 112 employees from all of the company’s different divisions, both in Germany and in Poland, gathered in Berlin for Pfleiderer’s first unconference. They discussed the overarching topic, which was ‘Our working environment in the future – concepts and success factors for One Pfleiderer’. In one-hour sessions, the participants addressed 34 ideas and topics, spoke about their experiences and got to know each other better. After this, everyone gathered together. Employees gave short, snappy presentations to the board members about their thoughts and ideas – an important step on the road to being an integrated company.
