A Design to Savour

Your mouth will start watering before you have even tried one of Tomasz Deker’s sweet delicacies – Deker is one of the finest patissiers in Poland. Even the outside of his new shop in the Galeria Bałtycka shopping centre in Gdańsk will whet your appetite.

Monika Potorska, Interior Architect
Interior architect Monika Potorska and her team had a special idea for the patisserie. The interior is reminiscent of an oversized box for Tomasz Deker’s sweet treats, which corresponds perfectly with the products created by this patissier and chocolatier. “The idea for the design and layout was inspired by the products. The box form mimics the ones used to package and transport the cakes,” explains Monika Potorska. But there is far more to it than that. Studio Potorska, a team of interior architects and designers, also redeveloped the logo and created a unique interpretation of the striking colours of black, white and pink. Where the interior design and colour scheme at Tomasz Deker had previously been characterised by the contrast between chocolate brown and pink, Studio Potorska has now created a much more airy appearance while maintaining the striking pink colour. The eye-catching theme of black and white stripes is present on the walls, the ceiling and the floor. It forms the perfect background for the pink accents and the wooden interior design elements. Soft and cosy free-standing furniture provides additional splashes of colour in the interior and stands out against the black and white flooring.

“When we were choosing the surfaces, we had specific expectations in terms of usability and design. We were looking for deep-coloured laminates that also gave the impression of softness. This was a combination that we found in Pfleiderer’s products,” says Monika Potorska. “For our projects, we often use materials that we like and are very familiar with. When we work together with suppliers, it is imperative that the surfaces we choose can be obtained quickly and that they fulfil the functionality requirements.” The interior architect has been working together with Pfleiderer for many years. She values the close communication and the wide range of products. “Our communication is exceptionally good and it is something that I value highly. We are close business associates. We rely on the Pfleiderer collection for most of our projects The quality and the variety of the decors and designs allows us to be very free in the way we use laminates and HPL panels in our designs,” Monika Potorska explains.

The combination of products and interior design was just as important to the designer as the visibility and expressiveness of the patisserie store. The design for the 120 square metre space is distinctive and Monika Potorska hopes that it will be the flagship project for additional Tomasz Deker stores: “We hope that this project has wet our client’s appetite. Fingers crossed!”
